Several injured in Iron County snowmobile crashes

IRON COUNTY, MI– The Iron County Sheriff’s Office says it investigated three snowmobile accidents over the weekend. All three happened on Saturday.

Two people were injured around 1:05 p.m. at the Snowmobile Hill Climb in Caspian. The throttle stuck open on one of the competitor’s machines as he went up the hill. He fell from the snowmobile, which careened into a group of spectators, injuring the legs of two people. Officials say a tether designed to shut down the machine failed when it became detached from the operator.

Around 1:40 p.m. Chris List, 39, of Iron Mountain was traveling on the Michigamme Reservoir when he struck an embankment. He was taken to Dickinson County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

And around 6 p.m. Jeffery Masley, 43, of Elk River, Minnesota was northbound on a trail into Crystal Falls when he failed to negotiate a curve and crashed into some trees. He was taken to Northstar Hospital in Iron River for treatment. Officials believe alcohol was a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.
