Pot growing operation discovered in Sagola Township

CHANNING, MI-- A Dickinson County resident has been arrested for having a marijuana growing operation in their residence.

Wednesday around 2 p.m. troopers from the Iron Mountain Post and agents from the Department of Corrections Parole Division contacted the subject in Channing on a parole violation.

Officers noticed the odor of marijuana in the house and executed a search warrant. They found growing plants and processed material valued at more than $121,000. Troopers also seized growing equipment.

Embezzlement charges for former assisted living facility director

MANISTIQUE, MI-- A Rapid River woman has been arrested for embezzling from a Manistique assisted living facility.

Troopers from the St. Ignace Post say Jana Chaperon, 39, was the former director of the Woodland Meadows Assisted Living Facility, owned by Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital. She resigned her post last summer before the facility was sold.

B&E suspect locks herself in loot-filled car

CURTIS, MI-- A Mackinac County woman is jailed after police found her locked in her own car... which contained stolen items.

Troopers from the St. Ignace Post say a breaking and entering was reported Monday around 7:35 a.m. at Chamberlin’s Ole Forest Inn in Portage Township. Investigation revealed a 42-year-old Curtis woman entered the inn and took numerous items.

Michigan's Most Wanted sex offender arrested

LAKE VILLA, IL - A man featured on Michigan’s Most Wanted Sex Offender website has been arrested in Illinois. State Police say 66-year old Wallace Heffernan was arrested Tuesday on an outstanding warrant for failure to comply with the Michigan Sex Offender Registry. He was arrested in Lake Villa, IL., by the United States Marshals Service and officers from the Northern Illinois Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Taskforce.

The Michigan Sex Offender Registry Unit received an anonymous tip through the public website regarding a possible location for Heffernan.

Cocaine bust in Ishpeming

ISHPEMING, MI - Detectives from the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team have arrested an Ishpeming resident on drug charges. Details remain sketchy, but UPSET detectives say their investigation led them to execute a search warrant at an Ishpeming residence where 1-ounce of cocaine and $1,800 were seized. The resident of the home was lodged in the Marquette County jail on charges of Delivery of Cocaine.

Methamphetamine materials found in playground

IRON RIVER, MI - A child at an Iron River is uninjured after been exposed to a broken pop bottle later found to have methamphetamine ingredients. Iron River Police were called to Bachman Park at about 11:30 this morning on a report of a child exposed to an unknown liquid. They found the burst bottle and further investigation turned up four additional bottles in nearby Nanalmo Park. Methamphetamine experts from the UPSET narcotics team collected all items which were determined to be methamphetamine precursor materials. The 8-year old child was not injured.

ASSOCIATED PRESS - Murder charges have been filed against a woman in the 1979 death of her husband during an invasion of their suburban Chicago home.
Cook County Circuit Judge Jill Cerone Marisie on Wednesday ordered Jacquelyn Greco of Crystal Falls, Mich. held without bond in the death of Inverness commodities broker Carl Gaimari.
Prosecutors told the judge investigators recorded a recent telephone conversation during which Greco said she "had a plan to kill the victim." Authorities say at the time of the murder, Greco was having an affair with another man.

IRON RIVER - An Iron River man has pleaded not guilty to criminal sexual conduct charges involving three minor females.

According to the Daily Press, Dennis Alan Johnson, 54, has pleaded not guilty to three felony counts of criminal sexual conduct-first degree and two felony counts of criminal sexual conduct-second degree.

Johnson allegedly had sexual contact with three girls - aged six to ten - in his home between 2002 and 2010.

The first degree charges carry a sentence of up to 25 year in prison… the second degree charges carry a sentence of up to 15 years

U.P. man arrested for murder in Louisiana

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP, MI - A 20-year-old Upper Peninsula man wanted for murder in Louisiana has been arrested.
State Police and U.S. Marshalls arrested the man Friday at a home in Ironwood Township near the Wisconsin border. He was taken into custody without incident… and his name has not yet been released.
The man is wanted on a warrant for first degree murder in Baton Rouge, LA.
