Voting registration deadline approaching

LANSING, MI (AP)-- Monday is the deadline to register to vote in the May 7 election.

Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson is urging all qualified residents to register by next week's deadline. No state or federal elections are scheduled for May, but some communities will have local elections in the second of four regularly scheduled elections held every year.

To register, applicants must be at least 18 years old by Election Day and be U.S. citizens and residents of Michigan.

Little chance that road proposal will get on May ballot

LANSING, MI (AP)-- Talk of putting part of a road funding plan on Michigan's May ballot is petering out.

The Republican leader of the state Senate says Tuesday the odds of putting a sales tax increase on the ballot by Thursday's deadline are below 10 percent.

Randy Richardville says lawmakers are pitching more ideas to fund road repairs, and some think discussions have been moving too quickly. Governor Rick Snyder has called for increased gasoline taxes and vehicle registration fees for road upkeep.

Native vote made a difference, officials say

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (AP)-- Organizers of a massive get-out-the-vote campaign that targeted Native American communities across the country are considering their efforts a success.

The National Congress of American Indians led the push. The group pointed Thursday to U.S. Senate races in Montana and North Dakota, as well as a voter identification ballot initiative in Minnesota, where it says the Native American turnout made a difference. The Minnesota voter ID requirement failed.

Update: McDowell concedes 1st District race

Update -

The race for the 1^st District House seat is officially over. Democrat Gary McDowell Friday conceded the race and called Republican Congressman Dan Benishek to congratulate him on his successful campaign and to wish him luck in his next term in congress.

Earlier in the week the vote totals gave Benishek a 1-percent lead as the final absentee, provisional and military ballots were left to be tallied.

1st District race watched by politicos

TRAVERSE CITY, MI (AP)-- Michigan's most competitive race for a U.S. House seat is in the northernmost district, where Republican Rep. Dan Benishek and Democratic challenger Gary McDowell are both predicting victory in Tuesday's election.
The 1^st District race is a rematch from 2010, when Benishek easily won. He was a newcomer to politics and backed by tea party groups.
The Democratic National Campaign Committee considers the seat among its ripest takeover prospects.

Costly for some counties to remove citizenship check box

LANSING, MI (AP)-- Some county clerks say efforts to ensure that all Michigan municipalities have ballot applications without a citizenship check-off box are costing them hundreds of dollars.
The effort follows a federal judge's ruling that blocked the boxes that Republican Secretary of State Ruth Johnson wanted for Tuesday's election.
