Alcohol likely a factor in Ely crash, police say

ELY TOWNSHIP, MI--   The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of those involved in a two-vehicle crash in Ely Township Tuesday.

It happened around 11:55 p.m. on US-41 West near County Road 496. Deputies say a pickup truck driven by David Murray, 41, of Champion was westbound when he crashed into the back of an SUV that was stopped and waiting to turn into a private drive. The SUV was driven by Melinda Nelson, 32, of West Ishpeming.

Murray was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Nelson and her four child passengers were wearing seat belts and were not injured.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
