Cleanup under way at former UP gas plant site

IRONWOOD (AP) — Crews plan to haul away up to 300 tons of material this week from the site of a former manufactured gas plant in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

The 'Daily Globe' of Ironwood reports coal tar and other waste have been buried under the site for decades, but wastes have begun to drift into the Montreal River.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says excavation of coal tar has begun at the Ironwood site.

Absorbent booms have been set up to prevent contaminants from washing away.

The EPA also is monitoring air quality in the area.
