College students collecting water for Flint

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University students are holding a bottled water drive for Flint residents.

Organizers are asking members of the campus and Marquette communities to bring cases of bottled water or sealed jugs of water to the Superior Dome Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Some students announced their opposition to the selection of Governor Rick Snyder as commencement speaker Sunday, mostly due to his handling of the Flint water crisis. Graduating Senior Mathan Frischkorn says the drive is an opportunity for protestors to help a community negatively impacted by the governor’s policy.

Members of activist group Flint Rising are attending the graduation ceremony and plan to turn their backs on the governor during his address.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
