DEQ backs CR 595 plan
MARQUETTE, MI-- The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is supporting a proposed new road in Marquette County.
Following a public input session in Marquette last month the DEQ is backing the construction of County Road 595, which would link the Rio Tinto Eagle mine to its processing facility in Humboldt. The 21-mile-long north-south route would also steer traffic away from more populated areas.
The Environmental Protection Agency has raised questions about what kind of environmental impacts the new road would have. The Marquette County Road Commission says it has improved its application and lessened such impacts.
The DEQ still needs the EPA’s go-ahead to issue a permit for CR 595.
