TRAVERSE CITY, MI (AP)-- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is looking for candidates to serve on its new Great Lakes Advisory Board.
The agency's Chicago regional office is accepting nominations through July 30. Officials say the board will make recommendations to the EPA chief on ways to protect the lakes and fix some of their biggest environmental problems, such as toxic pollution and invasive species.
Congress has spent more than $1 billion requested by the Obama administration on a wide-ranging restoration plan.
The EPA's advisory board will have about 15 members who will serve two-year terms. They will represent interests such as environmental advocacy groups, business, farming, academic research, local governments and American Indian tribes.
