Escanaba man facing multiple felonies in LaPalmes break-in

MARQUETTE, MI--   Arrest warrants have been issued for an Escanaba man involving a Wells Township breaking-and-entering.

Twenty-eight-year-old Benjamin Wyatt is accused of stealing a pickup from Escanaba on July 1 and driving to LaPalmes Country Corner. He allegedly broke into the residence portion of the building, then entered the attached post office and store. An estimated $9,000 worth of merchandise was stolen or damaged.

Wyatt is then believed to have driven the pickup down Little West Road, where it crashed into the Escanaba River. He’s accused of breaking into a camp, where he slept and took clothing. On the afternoon of July 2 a Wells Township man gave Wyatt a ride to the Mobile gas station in Gwinn. Wyatt then took a bus to Marquette, allegedly stole another pickup, and drove back to Escanaba.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office has obtained warrants for 1st-degree home invasion, 2nd-degree home invasion, and felony firearms. Marquette City Police have obtained a warrant for unlawful driving away of an automobile and driving while license suspended. The Marquette County charges won’t proceed until Escanaba Public Safety’s charge of unlawful driving away of an automobile is resolved in Delta County.

The case has also been forwarded to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for review in consideration of federal charges.
