FEMA denies individual flooding assistance appeal

MARQUETTE, MI--   FEMA has denied an appeal for individual assistance for those affected by June flooding in the U.P.

According to the denial letter, FEMA determined that the local and state impact from the severe storms and flooding was not beyond the combined capabilities of the state and local governments.

Governor Rick Snyder declared a state of disaster for Houghton, Gogebic, and Menominee counties. A presidential disaster declaration was then issued. That provided money for public facilities and infrastructure. But FEMA will not provide individual assistance for things like uninsured home repairs, loans for uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover.

Snyder says he is disappointed with the decision. He says he will now seek a physical and economic disaster declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration. A letter making the request was sent to the SBA Tuesday.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
