Flood-hit areas in the U.P. get help from state to match FEMA money

MARQUETTE, MI--   The state says it will match about half of U.P. municipalities’ $7.4 million tab for flood damages.

A preliminary assessment conducted in June indicated Houghton, Gogebic, and Menominee counties sustained more than $29.8 million in flood damages. That number represents the amount eligible for federal public assistance. State and local grant recipients must match 25 percent of federal funds in order to receive the full amount of relief available.

On Friday Governor Rick Snyder said the state will provide a match of $3.7 million toward the cost local entities must cover.

FEMA and the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division will start developing recovery projects for the three counties.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
