Flood victims should beware of scammers, officials say

HOUGHTON, MI--   Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette and the Houghton Police Department are warning about disaster scammers.

Schuette toured flood damage in the Copper Country Friday. WLUC-TV reports Schuette says scammers are always looking for a way to make money. Houghton Police Chief John Donnelly says residents should especially watch out for those who want to quick seal damaged basements. He says steer clear of anyone who says it has to be done immediately.

Residents should also be careful of so-called contractors going door-to-door to sell their services.

The Portage Health Foundation is developing a list of credited contractors.

Those who feel they might have been scammed should contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division.
