Governor talks education, economics in U.P.

MARQUETTE, MI--   While in the U.P. over the weekend, Governor Rick Snyder met with officials to discuss talent and business development.

On Friday Snyder and Talent and Economic Development Director Roger Curtis met with business leaders and others in Marquette to talk about creating talent consortiums needed to apply for Marshall Plan funds. The plan is a partnership between employers and educators to prepare students and residents for high-paying jobs in key industries.

Snyder said the U.P. is a great model for downstate schools with CTE programs like “Geometry in Construction.”

Sunday Snyder welcomed the Village of Ontonagon to the state’s Rising Tide program. It connects communities with technical assistance from state agencies to develop economic strategies and business opportunities.

Ontonagon is the fifth community to join the second round of the Rising Tide program, which was launched in 2015.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
