Greig calls for new school funding formula

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   The new top Democrat in the state House says she wants to re-think the way Michigan funds public schools.

New state House Minority Leader Christine Greig says the state has repeatedly undercut public education by raiding Michigan’s School Aid Fund to pay for other budget items. She wants to end that practice.

Greig also says there might be better ways to structure the state’s entire school funding model.

“We’ve got to re-look at our funding model because if we’re not putting the resources in the right places then it isn’t a level playing field for all kids,” she says.

Greig was a guest on WDET’s Detroit Today.

Democrats gained seats in the state House and Senate in the midterm elections. But Republicans still hold majorities in both chambers.
