SOUTH RANGE, MI (AP)-- The Historical Society of Michigan has raised $10,000 to help two groups recover from major flooding in the Western Upper Peninsula.
The Houghton County Historical Society is getting $8,000 after its storage building flooded in June. Water and sediment also filled the storage basement at the Copper Range Historical Society, which is receiving $2,000.
Larry Wagenaar of the Historical Society of Michigan says the damage was "overwhelming." He estimates that the Houghton County group might have damage worth $100,000 or more.
Copper Range board president Jean Pemberton tells The Daily Mining Gazette that some materials had to be thrown away. She says her group's furnace was also badly damaged.
