House passes bill containing Soo locks money

WASHINGTON, D.C.--   The U.S. House has passed legislation authorizing the construction of a new Soo lock.

Nearly a billion dollars is included in the Water Infrastructure Bill. It would be used to construct another large lock at the aging complex. Currently, the Poe lock is the only one that can accommodate larger vessels.

President Trump endorsed the project earlier this year. Governor Rick Snyder committed $50 million toward the project in May.

Officials say a breakdown at the locks would create a shipping backup that could devastate the economy.
