It's Sustainability Week at Northern

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Northern Michigan University group is hosting a week full of programs about sustainability through Saturday.

NMU EcoReps is a student sustainability peer-to-peer education program. Founder and Sustainability Week coordinator Georgia Harrison says stories abound regarding issues like climate change and recyclable waste, and this week’s events highlight ways people can help.

“If everyone’s working together to allow them to continue on to our future generations I believe we can all become more sustainable and use resources wisely and effectively, so that we can meet our needs currently without compromising the needs of those for the future,” she says.

Events include construction of a recycled materials waterfall in Jamrich Hall; a showing of the film The True Cost, a documentary about the clothes people wear; a clothing swap; and a Fix-it Friday event. For a complete list of events go to the NMU EcoReps page on Facebook.

Harrison notes the group is now taking applications from students who have at least one year left. They’re due Friday at 5 p.m. For more information go to the Sustainable NMU website.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
