Kids can learn about the trades at NMU summer camps

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University wants to expose young people to the skilled trades.

NMU is offering summer camps in July that focus on welding, construction, crime scene investigation, cosmetology, culinary arts, bicycle repair, and small engine repair.

JoLene Klumpp is Associate Director of Continuing Education and Workforce Development at NMU.  She says encouraging kids to go to a four-year college—while good—has scared them away from the skilled trades, creating a gap.  She hopes camp attendees find out what’s available and connect with the instructors to see what they could do in the years to come.

“We hope that they will see that it’s possible to look at a career as a welder or a career as an electrician, and that you can do that right here at Northern as well as you could do a four-year degree or take a certificate program,” she says.

The camps will run from July 13th through the 16th at NMU’s Jacobetti Center.  Two camps will be held each day.
