Lights to be turned off at NMU

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University is participating in the worldwide Earth Hour movement this weekend by shutting off residence hall lights.

The event encourages individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their lights for one hour to raise global awareness about environmental issues.

On Saturday NMU will shut off its residence hall lights from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The school is encouraging off-campus people to participate, as well.

Kathy Richards is NMU Associate Vice President of Engineering and Planning/Facilities. She says the Use Less Electricity campaign brings attention to how campus can reduce electric consumption and lessen our impact on the environment.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
