Marquette County drug case moves to federal court

MARQUETTE, MI--   A drug case against an Ishpeming Township man has moved to federal court.

Last month detectives with the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team and Homeland Security Investigations executed search warrants in Sands and Ishpeming townships. They seized about 8 ounces of crystal meth, 20 grams of heroin, and other illicit drugs. The street value was estimated to be more than $25,000.

Kelly Lawson, 33, was arrested at a Sands residence. He was originally charged in Marquette County, but the case is now in federal court. Lawson is charged with possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of meth.

He faces up to life in prison, if convicted.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
