Marquette officials looking for input on draft Land Development Code

MARQUETTE, MI--   The City of Marquette is holding an open house for its new Land Development Code.

City Planner and Zoning Administrator Dave Stensaas says the document replaces the zoning ordinance, sign ordinance, fence ordinance, and subdivision ordinance. It creates a new form-based code for North Third Street, eliminates the South Marquette waterfront form-based code, and updates the Downtown Marquette waterfront form-based code. Stensaas says the LDC reduces a lot of complexity.

“We’re pretty excited about this project because it’s been a long time coming,” he says. “Our codes have been sort of patched over the years with little amendments here and there, and hasn’t been holistically addressed in a couple of generations.”

Stensaas says it’s important to get public feedback on the LDC, as it will affect everyone’s property in one way or another.

“There’s a lot of reasons why people might be concerned about this, but overall I think people should be thinking about, ‘How does this affect the future of our city’s development?’”

The Planning Commission hopes to finalize the document in early December.

The open house takes place Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Citizens Forum in Lakeview Arena.
