MTU celebrates beginnings

HOUGHTON, MI--   It’s a day of beginnings at Michigan Tech.

University President Richard Koubek will chair his first Board of Trustees meeting Thursday morning. Koubek took the reins at the school July 1 after former president Glenn Mroz stepped down to resume teaching.

Thursday afternoon officials will also dedicate the recently completed Bernard Family Clock Tower. Part of the ongoing Alumni Way beautification project on campus, the tower stands between the Memorial Union and the R.L. Smith ME-EM buildings. It’s nearly 37 feet tall and boasts a four-foot-diameter clock on each face. The tower will contain a bronze bell that will ring on special occasions.

The dedication takes place at 4:30 p.m.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
