MTU to look at the State of Lake Superior next week

HOUGHTON, MI--   Researchers, tribes, government agencies, and others are gathering at Michigan Technological University next week for the State of Lake Superior conference.

They’ll discuss the latest scientific data and monitoring efforts, and what it signifies to communities and people across the Lake Superior basin.

The conference takes place next Tuesday through Friday. Two evening events are free and open to the public.

On Tuesday the “Lake Superior Lakewide Action and Management Plan” session will provide an overview of stressors and threats to Lake Superior, as well as actions being taken to protect and restore the lake.

On Wednesday Tech will hold a session called “Scientific challenges of developing a plan to protect Buffalo Reef.” It will describe alternatives being considered to protect the reef from stamp sands in the future, provide an open discussion on the challenges, and discuss how to overcome them.
