Nearly 40 people rescued from Little Presque

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A large group of people had to be rescued from Little Presque Isle Tuesday.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office received a report around 7:10 p.m. that several people were stranded

on the southern side of the island. They had apparently walked across a sand bar to Little Presque, but during the time they were on the island the wind kicked up and produced 3- to 5-foot waves.

The Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Division responded. The unit rescued 37 people--including two children and a dog--and transported them safely to shore.

Assisting at the scene were the Marquette Township Fire Department, Chocolay Township Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, and Marquette County Rescue 131.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
