NMU flag lowered for student death

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Northern Michigan University flag is lowered to half-staff Friday to honor a student who died this week.

Ben Johnson, 18, of Norway was involved in a traffic crash in Sands Township early Tuesday morning. He received fatal injuries.

Johnson graduated from Norway High School in 2017. He was a first-year NMU student pursuing a lineman certificate. Johnson played hockey for the Marquette Electricians travel team, and also played football, baseball, and soccer.

The NMU flag is lowered to half-staff and campus messages are sent after the passing of current students, faculty and staff, and after consultation with immediate family.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
