NMU installing water filtration systems in lead-affected buildings

MARQUETTE, MI--   Officials at Northern Michigan University say they’re making progress on mitigating high lead levels in the water of three campus buildings.

Testing was done last spring. The Thomas Fine Arts, Learning Resources Center, and PEIF buildings all showed lead levels higher than the recommended EPA standard.

Officials say filtration of drinking water fixtures was the quickest solution in order to be ready for the fall semester. Filter installation is complete on all water fountains and kitchenette sinks in TFA. Officials say they expect to complete the same process in the other two buildings by the beginning of the semester.

Regardless of how non-kitchenette sinks in the three buildings tested, they will be designated “hand washing only.”
