No injuries reported in Escanaba house fire

ESCANABA, MI--   A house in Escanaba was ravaged by fire over the weekend.

Public Safety officers were called Saturday around 2:15 a.m. to 408 South 18th Street and found heavy smoke coming out of the eaves. Several minutes later flames vented through the roof.

Officers located the fire in the attic space and were able to get it under control. Due to the construction of the house it took some time to fully extinguish the fire.

The resident of the house said he was wakened by a smoke alarm. He was able to exit the house, but couldn’t find his cat. Once the fire was under control firefighters searched for the cat, found it still alive, and provided treatment for smoke inhalation.

The house sustained extensive damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
