Officials release name of officer involved in fatal crash

MARQUETTE, MI--   The name of the police officer involved in a fatal accident on M-553 Tuesday has been released.

Just after 4 p.m. a northbound vehicle driven by 80-year-old Nathanial Carpenter of Marquette crossed the centerline and hit a Marquette City Police patrol car driven by Jacqueline Sweeney, 45, of Marquette.

Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene. Sweeney was taken to UPHS-Marquette, where she is in stable condition.

The accident remains under investigation. Officials believe a pre-existing medical condition may be a factor in the crash.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
