Second horse found dead at Iron County shooting site

CRYSTAL FALLS TOWNSHIP, MI--   The Iron County Sheriff’s Office has released additional information regarding a shooting in Crystal Falls Township that injured a horse.

On Thursday afternoon Iron County Central Dispatch received a call there had been a shooting and a horse had been shot. Another call indicated two bullets had entered a home near the incident.

Investigation revealed a draft horse was shot in the neck and hind quarter. It has been treated by a veterinarian and is still alive. Deputies also recovered two bullets that penetrated an occupied house located near the horse barn.

Investigation led to the arrest of an individual. Their name has not been released, pending arraignment.

Officials say a second horse was discovered dead on February 24, 2017, after it broke a leg and severed a main artery.  They say evidence discovered in the March 16 incident ties the suspect to the February incident.

The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Iron County District Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
