State to appeal judge’s decision to bring back straight-ticket voting

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   The state plans to appeal a judge’s decision that said straight-ticket voting is allowed in Michigan. Governor Rick Snyder signed the law that banned the practice.

A lawsuit to keep straight ticket voting was filed in 2016. A federal judge ruled that the ban disproportionately hurts minorities and means longer wait times at the polls.

The Attorney General’s Office is representing the state in the case. Andrea Bitely is a spokesperson for the AG’s office.

“As Attorney General, Bill Schuette has a responsibility to uphold Michigan law and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

Supporters of a straight-ticket voting ban say it opens the doors for third party candidates to win elections and inspires more informed voting.
