Students battle invasive species in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI (AP)--   Interns from Michigan and Wisconsin are doing their part to clear invasive species from the Presque Isle Bog and other sites in the Upper Peninsula.

The students are from Northern Michigan University, Michigan Tech, and St. Norbert College in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They are interning with the Marquette County Conservation District.

District Manager Renee Leow called the interns "our first line of defense" against the spread of invasive species. She says 11 interns have worked since May 18, with a new batch in this week.

Workers at the Presque Isle Bog pulled invasive plants such as narrow-leaved cattails and swamp thistle. The effort is part of a Michigan Department of Environmental Quality mitigation project for the city of Marquette.
