House passes bill to curb welfare abuse

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The Michigan House has overwhelmingly approved legislation designed to crack down on welfare abuse. 

The bill passed Thursday would require that the Department of Human Services check the U.S. Social Security Death Index once a month to see if a Bridge Card recipient has died. The department already does this, but the bill is intended to ensure that the practice continues in following administrations.

Assistance restored to MI Bridge Card users

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The state has added money to all of the debit cards of 85,000 Michigan food assistance recipients and families who temporarily went without the aid last week. 

Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget spokesman Kurt Weiss said all the impacted cards had been restored and loaded with the food assistance benefit as of 11:22 a.m. Saturday.

The issue was caused by an employee error.  Recipients with ID numbers ending in "0'' discovered money wasn't on their cards Thursday as expected.

Welfare recipients to be banned from using benefit cards at casinos

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Michigan lawmakers want to prevent welfare recipients from rolling the dice with public money. 

The Senate has given final approval to a bill to prevent people from using their electronic benefits card to get cash from casino ATMs.  The bill requires the Department of Human Services to work with casinos on a way to block withdrawals from the machines.
