Police chase results in rollover crash in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Hancock man was hospitalized after he led Marquette Police on a chase through the southern part of the city.

Thursday around 7:30 p.m. an officer stopped a vehicle for tailgating on US-41 South near Shiras Drive.  When asked for his license and registration the 21-year-old driver refused and fled the scene in his car.

A chase ensued northbound to the roundabout, then resumed on US-41 South.  The suspect lost control of his vehicle near the Econo Lodge.  The car crossed all lanes of traffic and rolled over several times, ejecting the driver.  The vehicle came to rest on the shore of Lake Superior.

The driver was taken to Marquette General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries but was admitted for observation.

Charges are being sought against him, and the incident remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
