UP energy facility plan approved by state regulators

LANSING, MI--   The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved a plan to build two power plants in the Upper Peninsula.

Under the Upper Michigan Energy Resources Corporation plan the natural gas-fueled plants would be built in Negaunee and Baraga Townships. The facilities would generate about 183 megawatts.

The project is expected to cost about $277 million, to be funded by UMERC. Operation of the plants is expected in 2019—a year before the Presque Isle Power Plant is scheduled to retire.

The Midcontinent Independent System Operator still needs to approve the plan.
