Man drowns in Gogebic County falls

WAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI--   Michigan State Police from the Wakefield Post are investigating a drowning in Wakefield Township. 

Troopers were dispatched Friday around 8:30 p.m. to the Presque Isle Campground off of County Road 519. A 911 caller reported a man had fallen from Presque Isle Falls.

Police found a man in the water who was unresponsive. The 39-year-old Merrill Wisconsin man was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers were assisted by U.S. Forest Service officers, the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office, Gogebic County Search and Rescue, and Department of Natural Resources officers at the Porcupine Mountains.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
