Alger County personnel rescue family from waters near Grand Island

CHRISTMAS, MI— Four people were rescued from Lake Superior in Alger County Friday.

Around 2:30 p.m. the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call. A woman said her husband had fallen from a boat and she couldn’t see him. Deputies, the Alger County Rescue 21 Team, a U.S. Forest Service officer, and the U.S. Coast Guard responded.

Officials determined a family of four were traveling to Grand Island from the Christmas area. The mother and daughter were in a canoe and the father and son were in a kayak. As they paddled, the kayak began to take on water and eventually sank. The boy was able to get into the canoe, but the father couldn’t. He stayed with the kayak as long as possible while waiting for help but drifted away from the canoe.

Rescuers recovered all four people. They were taken back to the mainland.
