Dump truck crashes into vehicle, killing 1 in Marinette County

GOODMAN, WI— One person was killed in a Marinette County traffic crash Monday.

Sheriff Randy Miller says deputies were dispatched around 5:20 p.m. to U.S. Highway 8 just east of Tower Road in the town of Goodman.

Officials say John Benzow, 69, of Goodman pulled out onto the highway and failed to yield to a partially-loaded dump truck. Benzow was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated. He suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

The driver of the dump truck, Randy Peterson, 65, of Loretto, Michigan, was uninjured.

The crash remains under investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, and Marinette County Medical Examiner.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
