Man answering phone crashes van in Marquette Township

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI— No serious injuries were reported, after a car crashed into Marquette Township woods on Saturday.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says it happened just before 2 p.m. on Wright Street near Commerce Drive. An 82-year-old Jenison, Michigan man was southbound in a van when he became distracted by his phone. As the driver answered the phone, he didn’t see the road curved to the left. The vehicle went down an embankment and into the tree line, hitting several small trees.

Of the four people in the van, only one complained of minor injuries and sought their own treatment.

Wright Street was closed for a short time while the vehicle was removed from the ditch.

The driver was found to be at fault in the crash.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
