UPDATE: Missing boaters located

UPDATE, 6/10/24, 8:00 p.m.: The Michigan State Police Marine Services Unit located the capsized boat and the two missing people Monday afternoon. The victims were deceased and found in an area nearly 220 feet in depth in Lake Superior. The families have been notified, but no names will be released.

UPDATE, 6/10/24, 7:30 a.m.: Personnel scoured the area along Second Sand Beach in Lake Superior Sunday. Some debris was located, but the boat and missing people still have not been found. The search continues.

BARAGA COUNTY, MI— Two people remain missing after a boat capsized on Lake Superior.

Saturday at 12:15 p.m., Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post and deputies from the Houghton and Baraga County Sheriff’s Offices were dispatched to an area off of Second Sand Beach in Keweenaw Bay. A 21-foot vessel with five people aboard had capsized.

A person in another boat in the area responded to the scene and was able to rescue three people. As of 8:30 p.m., the boat was not located, and two other people were missing.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded with a boat from Coast Guard Station Portage and a helicopter from Traverse City. The Michigan State Police Marine Services Unit also responded to the scene to assist.

No names have been released. The site remains an active scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
