Coast Guard rescues several people after their boat capsizes near Mackinac Island

U.S. Coast Guard

ST. IGNACE, MI— Five people and a dog were rescued from Lake Huron near Mackinac Island Friday after their boat capsized.

Just after 2 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes received a report from Mackinac County Dispatch of a capsized vessel. Multiple people were in the water—including children—about 200 yards offshore from the Grand Hotel.

The Coast Guard immediately launched a 29-foot Response Boat from Station St. Ignace. It responded to the scene along with a Mackinac Marine Rescue boat and the Shepler’s Ferry Wyandot.

Within 20 minutes of the Coast Guard’s initial notification, all five people—and the dog—were safely recovered from the water.
