Madison, WIS – There's a bill in the state legislature aimed at protecting the financial information of people who use credit and debit cards. The Data Security Act would punish merchants or card companies for holding onto sensitive information. It would also make merchants repay any losses due to the lost or stolen pin numbers that are collected from the magnetic strip on the back of a credit or debit card. The bill would require merchants to make sure their electronic payment services delete the information after a transaction is complete.
