Lawmakers want per-child credit instead of EITC

By Associated Press

Undated – Low-income workers may get a $25-per-child Michigan tax credit under a plan being discussed at the Capitol.

House Tax Policy Committee chairman Jud Gilbert says the state can't afford the $360 million price tag for the state Earned Income Tax Credit, but it can help low-income families with about $100 million in tax breaks.

The per-child credit would give $25 million to low-income families, with most also sharing in $79 million set aside to increase an income tax credit for the property taxes or rent they pay.

The Michigan League for Human Services has fought elimination of the state EITC. A spokeswoman says low-income working families will lose hundreds of dollars if it's scrapped.
