MPSC wants more information on potential U.P. utility

LANSING, MI--   The parties involved in a proposal to create a Michigan-only utility in the U.P. are being asked to provide additional information on certain issues.

In June, Wisconsin Electric Power Company and the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation applied to have their electric and natural gas distribution assets transferred to the Upper Michigan Energy Resources Corporation—a to-be-formed utility that would provide service to customers only in Michigan.  On October 14 all parties in the case filed a settlement agreement to resolve all issues in the matter.

Now the Michigan Public Service Commission is seeking information on whether the settlement proposal meets the required statutory elements.  It cited, in particular, sections dealing with whether the proposed action would have an adverse impact on rates and the provision of safe, reliable, and adequate energy service.

The parties have until November 23 to file initial briefs that address those concerns.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
