Downtown Marquette shops hoping for summer surge in tourism

MARQUETTE, MI— Marquette businesses have struggled over the past few months due to a lack of snow.

The warmer, dryer winter canceled several downtown events that businesses rely on to stay afloat. Tourism has been returning slowly to pre-COVID levels, but the shortfall of snow has been an issue.

Michael Bradford is the Business Outreach and Promotions Director for the Marquette Downtown Development Authority. He says attracting the community to local businesses is likely the key to helping the area.

“They are kind of the low-hanging fruit, to where we can help make the community a bit more sustainable if we get them to come out more and not rely on the waves of tourism that can be pretty unpredictable.”

Bradford says business potentially could be made up in the summer months with the reliable jump of tourism that comes through Marquette.
