Blemke found competent to stand trial for stabbing

MARQUETTE, MI--   An Ishpeming man accused of stabbing a Marquette man to death last June has been found competent to stand trial.

Derek Blemke, 24, is charged with homicide—open murder in the death of Brandon LaFavre, 21, in an apartment on Wright Street.  LaFavre suffered 24 stab wounds.

A competency exam to determine if Blemke would understand court proceedings was ordered in September. The Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office is waiting for the results of a criminal responsibility evaluation, which is meant to help determine if Blemke was legally sane at the time of the murder.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
