Officials more cautious about upcoming Mackinac Bridge events

ST. IGNACE, MI (AP)--   Police in the Upper and Lower peninsulas say a bombing at the Boston Marathon will prompt tighter security during walking and running events along the 5-mile-long Mackinac Bridge.

Mackinaw City police Chief Patrick Wyman tells the Petoskey News-Review that screenings for packages and other added measures may come during a Memorial Day run, a popular Labor Day walk and an event in September.

Wyman says new security measures will include checking into trash cans at the start, end and along the route.

State Police St. Ignace Post commander Lt. Joe Shier says the primary risk areas are the start and finish line, and traffic along the bridge's other lane during events.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
