UP getting grant to help remove barriers to employment for at-risk residents

LANSING, MI— Upper Peninsula Michigan Works is getting more than $770,000 from the state to help people get and retain jobs.

The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity is giving 27 recipients $14.4 million from the Barrier Removal and Employment Success Expansion Grant fund. It aims to help non-profits provide programming to support employment and reemployment of at-risk individuals and remove barriers to employment for low-income Michiganders.

The money will be used to address a variety of employment barriers, including transportation, housing, childcare, clothing, work tools and equipment, training materials, legal services, and others.
