Ideas for new Marquette Senior High School nickname sought

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education is looking for nickname ideas for Marquette Senior High School.

Officials say the ideal nickname would pay tribute to the unique aspects of the school district and community. It cannot reference any protected class, like race, gender, or religion. And—as they were dropped this summer—the names “Redmen” and “Redettes” will not be considered.

Ideas can be emailed to schoolboard@mapsnet.org, mailed to MAPS School Board, 1201 West Fair Avenue in Marquette, or submitted online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/69BMGQR.

Ideas must be received by November 17th.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
