Appointments may be needed to register your bear

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says successful bear hunters should call ahead before visiting a station to register their kills.

There are more than 75 stations where hunters can register the bears they take, which is required. But they may need to make an appointment in advance because of staffing shortages.

The DNR's 2012 Bear Hunting Digest has a list of the stations. It's available at DNR operations service centers and from license vendors and online. Registration stations that require an appointment are marked with an asterisk.

Data collected at registration stations is used to estimate the bear population and helps DNR wildlife staff make recommendations on hunting seasons and license quotas.
