Great Lakes Advisory Board chosen

CHICAGO, IL (AP)--   Federal officials have chosen the members of a panel that will advise them about a program to improve the Great Lakes environment.

The Great Lakes Advisory Board will consist of scientists and representatives of advocacy groups, businesses, state and local governments, tribes, and other interests.  The 18-member panel will report to the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

The EPA is the lead agency in carrying out the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a $1 billion effort to make progress on lingering issues such as invasive species, habitat loss, and nuisance algae.  It's also accelerating cleanup of 29 toxic hot spots around the region.

The board appointments were announced Wednesday. A list of panel members is posted on the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative's website.
